What a color! It reminds me of the color of the so-called Austrian copper rose, Rosa 'Foetida Bicolor'.
And what are these large-flowered, broad-leaved portulacas? To what species are they assigned? I'm not sure. The several which I have tried have been good garden plants, although they don't seem to bloom every day. I'm going to try to keep this one going throughout the winter.
Although frequently (mis) identified as Portulaca oleracea, the broad-leafed cultivated species is actually P. umbraticola. I addressed this in one of my blog posts about P. oleracea (common purslane) a while back: http://dctropics.blogspot.com/2014/07/eat-your-weeds.html
ReplyDeleteThanks, John. While typing up that post, I Googled portulaca images to see what was up with these plants. And I found some images where the text assigned them to Portulaca umbraticola, which was a new name to me. One such site called them Australian portulacas! But since P. umbraticola is native to Colombia, I knew something was off there.
ReplyDeleteThanks for helping to clarify this.
